Autism Classification Using Brain Functional Connectivity Dynamics and Machine Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of the present study is to identify autism using machine learning techniques and resting-state brain imaging data, leveraging the temporal variability of the functional connections (FC) as the only information. We estimated and compared the FC variability across brain regions between typical, healthy subjects and autistic population by analyzing brain imaging data from a world-wide multi-site database known as ABIDE (Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange). Our analysis revealed that patients diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show increased FC variability in several brain regions that are associated with low FC variability in the typical brain. We then used the enhanced FC variability of brain regions as features for training machine learning models for ASD classification and achieved 65% accuracy in identification of ASD versus control subjects within the dataset. We also used node strength estimated from number of functional connections per node averaged over the whole scan as features for ASD classification. The results reveal that the dynamic FC measures outperform or are comparable with the static FC measures in predicting ASD. 1 ar X iv :1 71 2. 08 04 1v 1 [ qbi o. Identification of mild cognitive impairment disease using brain functional connectivity and graph analysis in fMRI data
Background: Early diagnosis of patients in the early stages of Alzheimer's, known as mild cognitive impairment, is of great importance in the treatment of this disease. If a patient can be diagnosed at this stage, it is possible to treat or delay Alzheimer's disease. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is very common in the process of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease. In th...
متن کاملMental Arithmetic Task Recognition Using Effective Connectivity and Hierarchical Feature Selection From EEG Signals
Introduction: Mental arithmetic analysis based on Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal for monitoring the state of the user’s brain functioning can be helpful for understanding some psychological disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or dyscalculia where the difficulty in learning or understanding the arithmetic exists. Most mental arithmetic recogni...
متن کاملFeature Selection Based on Genetic Algorithm in the Diagnosis of Autism Disorder by fMRI
Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) occurs based on the continuous deficit in a person’s verbal skills, visual, auditory, touch, and social behavior. Over the last two decades, one of the most important approaches in studying brain functions in autistic persons is using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). Objectives: It is common to use all brain regions in functional extracti...
متن کاملBrain Connectivity Reflected in Electroencephalogram Coherence in Individuals With Autism: A Meta-analysis
Introduction: Many theories have been proposed about the etiology of autism. One is related to brain connectivity in patients with autism. Several studies have reported brain connectivity changes in autism disease. This study was performed on Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies that evaluated patients with autism, using functional brain connectivity, and compared them with typically-developing i...
متن کاملComputer-Aided Tinnitus Detection based on Brain Network Analysis of EEG Functional Connectivity
Background: Tinnitus known as a central nervous system disorder is correlated with specific oscillatory activities within auditory and non-auditory brain areas. Several studies in the past few years have revealed that in the most tinnitus cases, the response pattern of neurons in auditory system is changed due to auditory deafferentation, which leads to variation and disruption of the brain net...
